Warren Buffett, the legendary billionaire and Berkshire Hathaway chairman, is known for his humble lifestyle and sharp business acumen. Still, there’s a quirky side to him that not everyone knows about. Case in point: once, during high school, he picked up a date in a hearse.

Don’t Miss:

In HBO’s 2017 documentary Becoming Warren Buffett, he laughs as he recalls the memory. It’s a story you wouldn’t expect from a man worth billions. But Buffett, even as a young man, had his unique approach to life.

“I went to my 60th reunion at Wilson High,” Buffett shared. “There was a girl there named Barbara Wigan. I took her out one time to the Uptown Theater in Washington and I asked her whether she remembered what movie we saw. She said, ‘No, I don’t remember that.’ But then she said, ‘I do remember one thing … you picked me up in a hearse.'” He joked that maybe he shouldn’t have asked.

Yes, you read that right – Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world, picked up his high school date in a funeral car.

“I owned a half-interest in a hearse while I was in high school, which was not the smoothest thing,” he admits. “Not the coolest thing you could do on a date.”

The hearse wasn’t a one-time deal. His older sister, Doris, even chimed in during the documentary, recalling how their mother wasn’t thrilled about the hearse either. “He had so many interests … but when he had the hearse, my mother made him get rid of it because we had a neighbor whose husband had just died and she didn’t think it was too attractive sitting in front of our house.”

It’s hard to imagine Buffett as a high schooler with an old hearse sitting in front of his house, but that makes him so fascinating. Despite being one of the richest people in the world today, he’s always been a bit unconventional – and clearly, that’s never slowed him down.
