NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The first investigation area of hurricane season has formed in the Gulf just offshore of Southwest Florida.

Conditions are not favorable for development but heavy rains are likely for several days over South Florida. This could yield rainfall totals between 8-12″ for a large area that is currently experiencing a moderate to severe drought.

Eventually this moisture will make its way across Florida and out into the Atlantic.

Signs do point to a piece of this energy remaining over the Gulf into Father’s Day weekend. As the pattern changes and the flow starts to push this tropical moisture westward, some heavy rains could spread into the Gulf Coast. This will be monitored by the FOX 8 weather team through the week as it may impact your Father’s Day plans.

Another weak low could form in the Southwest Gulf by early next week. If any of these weak systems form into a tropical storm, the first name on the list is Alberto.
