Postal retiree Pat Conger plans to spend her retirement doing “what I want to, when I want to”

The Plains Post office, recently renamed the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post office, is losing long-time employee Pat Conger. After serving for 34 years, she finally decided it was time to retire.

Conger joked about throwing her alarm clock out the window to celebrate her retirement. With Saturdays newly free from postal duties, she looks forward to yard sales and community events. “I plan on doing what I want to, when I want to.”

April 30 was her last day. Flowers, chocolates, and handwritten messages decorated the inside of the post office. Mayor Joey Recker and Plains City Council members gathered at 3:30 p.m. to wish her farewell from her job at the post office- though not from their community or hearts.

Recker read a resolution honoring her for her service. “Her unwavering commitment, friendly demeanor and genuine concern for the well-being of others have made her an invaluable part of the daily life of Plains and a beloved member of the community.”

Conger gave several hugs to those who had come to honor her service. “I’ve shaken hands with a lot of people, but this is one town where I feel like I can hug anybody I want to.”

Council member AB Jackson praised Conger for her kindness. “Miss Pat has not only been a postmaster, but she’s been a friend to this community.”
