Millions of Americans who receive Supplemental Social Security (SSI) benefits are set to receive two payments in May. Thanks to the way the monthly benefits are paid out, the schedule requires those recipients to be paid a couple days earlier than normal.

Social Security payments in general are issued at the same time each month, depending on the type of benefits being paid out. Those who receive SSI are paid on the first day of each month. However, because June 1 falls on a Sunday this year, SSI recipients will receive their June payment on May 30.
SSI beneficiaries will also receive two payments in August, October and December, because of the how the calendar aligns.
For Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits, the schedule is based on when the beneficiary was born. Those born between the 1st and 10th of the month are paid on the second Wednesday of each month. Those born between the 11th and 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, while those born between the 21st and 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
Anyone who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or who receives both SSI and SSDI benefits are paid on the 3rd of each month. However, if the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment is issued early. That’s the case for May, as May 3 falls on a Saturday, meaning payments will actually go out on May 2.
