US Stock Market Closing Bell: Nasdaq Composie crashes over 250 pts, Dow up 160 pts; NVIDIA falls 3%

US Stock Market Close (February 25), Dow Jones, S&P 500, Nasdaq: Wall Street benchmarks—the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite—finished a largely negative session on a mixed note on Tuesday, after a weaker-than-expected consumer confidence reading dented investor confidence. Selling pressure in spaces like energy, technology and communication services weighed on the market, though buying in consumer staples, real estate and healthcare categories lent some support.

What rose and what fell? Among index heavyweighs, NVIDIA and Goldman Sachs fell 2-3 per cent for the day while Walmart and Home Depot were among the top gainers, rising 3-4 per cent.

Meanwhile, investors remained on the back foot fearing policy uncertainty after US President Donald Trump’s announcements this month that he would announce tariffs covering newer areas, in addition to previously announced plans to impose duties on imported cars, chips and drugs. Some analysts also said that concerns about demand for technology, especially AI, fuelled the sell-off in tech stocks.

US Stock Market on Tuesday, February 25 | Here is how Dow Jones, S&P 500 & Nasdaq fared at the closing bell

  • DJIA: up 160 pts, or 0.4 per cent, at 43,621.2
  • S&P 500: down 28 pts, or 0.5 per cent, at 5,955.3
  • Nasdaq: 260.5 pts, or 1.4 per cent, at 19,026
