Watching Invest 97-L in Caribbean, concern for SWLA is low

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Even though it’s November, the tropics have picked up with a wave in the southern Caribbean garnering our attention.

KPLC First Alert Forecast(KPLC)

Invest 97-L is a broad area of low-pressure in the southern Caribbean. It has increasing chances to develop as it heads northward into the Caribbean next week. Initially, it‘s likely to move more northward towards Jamaica, and then northwestward as high pressure builds over it. This means there’s a chance whatever becomes of it may end up in the southern Gulf next week.

Beyond that, it is too soon to say how much strength 97-L gains and its’ ultimate fate. Interaction with islands in the northern Caribbean may keep it week, or it could avoid them and gain a little more strength. Additionally, upper-level winds are likely to be quite strong over the northern Gulf next week and if 97-L were to get that far, it‘d have to contend with cooler waters as well. So our concern in SWLA is very low. But we‘ll watch it closely and it’s possible moisture from it could allow a chance for rain closer to next weekend.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Subtropical Storm Patty formed near the Azores in the far northeast Atlantic and should weaken as it heads towards parts of Europe.
